ICO
Under the Data Protection Act of 2018 (DPA) and the Freedom of Information Act of 2000 (FOIA), among other relevant laws, the Information Commissioner is the independent regulator for data protection and freedom of information in the United Kingdom. The Information Commissioner is a Corporation Sole, as defined under the DPA.
The Commissioner holds all official ICO rights and responsibilities as a Corporation Sole. In accordance with best practices and taking into account the scope and intricacy of the ICO’s duties, the Commissioner has decided to appoint Executive and Non-Executive Directors to the Management Board. The Management Board, which the Commissioner chairs, works to carry out the Information Commissioner’s mandate of establishing the ICO’s strategic direction.
Organisations that pay the data protection charge, which accounts for more than 85% of the ICO’s yearly expenses, are the main source of funding for the institution. The government provides grant-in-aid to complement this in order to finance the ICO’s enforcement of several laws.
Unless they are exempt, businesses processing personal data under the Data Protection Act of 2018 are required to pay a data protection charge.
