Roles & Responsibilities

Understand the role of a paediatric first aid responder, including scene safety, SHAPE assessments, and DRAB primary surveys.

Unresponsive but Breathing

Respond correctly to an unresponsive infant or child who is breathing normally, including the recovery position and seizure management.

CPR & Resuscitation

Deliver infant and child CPR — chest compressions and rescue breaths — and understand when and how to use an AED.

Airway Obstruction

Provide first aid for mild and severe choking in both infants and children using back blows, chest thrusts, and abdominal thrusts.

Bleeding, Shock & Anaphylaxis

Manage external bleeding, recognise and treat shock, and respond to anaphylaxis including use of an adrenaline auto-injector.

Module 3
CPR — Infants & Children

Child CPR — 30:2 chest compressions and rescue breaths
Infant CPR — two-finger compressions, 100–120/min rate
Initial 5 rescue breaths before starting CPR cycle
Lone responder procedure — 1 minute CPR then call 999
When to stop CPR and how to use a paediatric AED

Airway Obstruction & Choking

Mild vs severe obstruction — recognition and response
Child choking — back blows and abdominal thrusts (up to 5×3)
Infant choking — back blows and chest thrusts (no abdominal)

Bleeding, Shock & Anaphylaxis

Six wound types — abrasion, laceration, puncture, and more
Arterial, venous, and capillary bleeding — assessment and risk
Controlling external bleeding — direct pressure and elevation
Recognising shock and 6-step treatment protocol
Anaphylaxis symptoms, triggers, and adrenaline auto-injector use

Medical Emergencies & Injuries

Burns and scalds — superficial, partial, and full-thickness
Meningitis recognition — non-fading rash and urgent response
Asthma attacks — inhaler types and step-by-step treatment
Heat exhaustion vs heat stroke — differences and treatment
Hypothermia, electric shock, poisoning, bites, nosebleeds
Sprains, fractures, bumps, and musculoskeletal injuries
